At the ripe age of 2, my son has started cursing. He’s super fond of the phrase, “Oh Shit!” At least he uses it in context, so you can’t judge me! I’m just kidding, of course you can judge if you like.
Anyways, this is a phrase my husband is fond of using. We, of course, have tried to curb our language habits, but a stray expletive gets away from us from time to time. What can I say?
A few weeks ago, we noticed Noah saying phrases that sounded suspect, but since he’s not always the most articulate, we couldn’t be 100% sure of what he was saying. In the last week, however, we are sure. It’s as bad as we thought. At first we tried to redirect him- encourage him to say “Oh shoot!” or “Oh gosh!” That didn’t seem to work because then he just goes and says all three now before circling back around to “Oh shit!”
As I said, it’s in context. He dropped his plane? “Oh shit!” Spilled food all over himself? “Oh shit!” (and resumes eating). Going over bumps on the trail? “Ohshitohshitohshitohshit!” You get the idea. This may be TMI, but I was breastfeeding the baby and when I started leaking, Noah walked by, took one look at me and yelled “Oh shit!” before picking up his plane and walking away. Nice.
Our method right now is to just ignore it and we’ll see what happens. Maybe that phrase will become less exciting? As for now, it’s kind of hilarious since he’s got the cute toddler voice.
Does anyone else have little kids with colorful language? What did you do about it? I’d love to hear about your experiences.
In the meantime, I’ll leave you with this video.
