Festival season is upon us. We are excited to announce that in addition to Shakori Hills and Moogfest, we have also been invited to cover The Art of Cool Festival in Durham this year.
This is the third year that The Art of Cool Festival takes places. It is a 3 day event that will run from Friday, May 6th to Sunday, May 8th in various venues all throughout the city including Motorco, the Carolina Theater, the Pinhook, and more. The Art of Cool Festival is hosted by the non-profit Art of Cool Project and highlights jazz and alternative soul music as well as celebrates the combination of business and music. In addition to musical performances and various free day parties, there will be a JamShopSipRepeat shopping party with vendors and some of the performing artists.
Of course, there will be great music. Some of the performing headliners include Terence Blanchard, The Internet, 9th Wonder, Rapsody, Maroon 5’s PJ Morton, Kamasi Washington, and more. But there are a lot of other lesser-known aspects that warrant highlighting as well.
For instance, one thing that I personally love about this event is how many of the events are held at local businesses throughout and that it raises a lot of revenue that is poured back into Durham. Last year, over $900,000 was generated that had an economic impact for our city and to our local businesses combined.
Another thing that is pretty neat is that the festival hosts an Innovate Your Cool Conference. This is where a spotlight is shone on art, creativity, and how it can impact a change in the world. The great thing is that there will be room for involvement for the younger crowd; Morehead Planetarium and Science Center will host music and science sessions for kids and there will be a Pitch Perfect competition where high school and college students will get to pitch their idea for a business that would solve a major problem and get feedback.
